Historical Marker dedication, April 2008About Us

Carthage Christian Church was founded in 1832 by Walter Scott, a prominent frontier evangelist within the Stone-Campbell movement of the early 1800s. Scott pastored the church at Carthage, and later moved his family up from Cincinnati. He was a teacher and writer, publishing his own newspaper, the Evangelist. Although he had a hand in founding numerous congregations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, he spent 10 years as the pastor of the church at Carthage.

Today, the people of Carthage Christian Church are rekindling Walter Scott’s passion for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our approach to Christianity is simple: We accept Jesus as the Lord and Savior of our lives. We believe in a God who seeks to be in conversation with us through Scripture, prayer, the community of believers, and the world around us.

As a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper weekly in worship. Our founders believed that communion — unity with God and each other through Jesus Christ — is central to what “church” is all about. At the table, Jesus is the host, and we invite all who desire to know him to share in the bread and cup, regardless of religious affiliation or background.

That’s our story. Now it’s your turn. What’s your story? Tell us.
