Thanks to one of our neighbors who spotted the disassembled A/C unit while walking his dog in the alley behind the church, we were able to at least get out there and prevent further damage. But it’s an eye-opener to realize that even churches aren’t immune to the thefts that have plagued our community. In fact, we’re not the first church they’ve hit. It was probably just a matter of time.

The remains of our air conditioning unit, 10/28/11.When the police came out to file the report, they told us that the thieves have to turn off the power before they start cutting apart the air conditioner to get at the copper or other materials that they can take to the recycling center and exchange for cash. Occasionally, the police officer told us, they will forget to turn off the power or not do it correctly, and then “Zap!” they fry themselves.

How sad that some mother’s child, some father’s son, some grandmother’s grandbaby, is out there risking their life just for some copper, probably to feed some addiction or habit. As the pastor, I can’t even be angry, I just pray that those who are doing this will wake up and realize that God created them to be more, do more, and have more than what this life of petty crime can provide.

Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

Officer Jodie of the Cincinnati Police Dept. gave her monthly update. Burglaries are up in Carthage, especially in vacant properties. If you notice suspicious activity at a vacant house, contact the police at 352-3536. Crime generally goes up in March because people get “spring fever” after being cooped up during the winter.

April 9 is the community Easter Egg Hunt at Caldwell Park. Meet there at 11:15. Don’t be late - the egg hunt is usually over in about 5 minutes!

OKI Auto Auctions will be moving into one of the vacant Jim Beam facilities in May.

On April 1, there will be a live band at Andy’s Cafe on Vine Street. Cindy is organizing another get-together/fundraiser at Andy’s in May. Stay tuned for details.

The Carthage Seniors have continued to meet on weekdays up at Hartwell Recreation Center (since the Carthage Rec Center closed in January). However they would prefer to find a place to meet in Carthage. Bob Hartlaub encouraged them to talk to churches and to look into maybe renting the building on Vine Street recently rehabbed by Cincinnati Housing Partners. They have a little money, but not much, and probably could not rent the building, so they are hoping to find something inexpensive or free. They generally meet from 10-2 on weekdays and have two Friday night dinners each month at 5 pm.

U-Pull & Pay - the owner spoke at the meeting, to thank the community for their support of his proposal and to find out if there are any problems. A couple of residents mentioned things and he said he’d look into getting the problems addressed. He also said they’re hiring for two positions. One is a customer service/cashier, and the other is in production (manual heavy labor).

Yesterday I preached on Matthew 4:1-11; the story of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. The scripture says he was “led by the Spirit” right after his baptism out into the wilderness “to be tempted by the devil.”

I’ve preached on this text before, but this time I really got to thinking about what it says in this section, even before the devil shows up. The Spirit led Jesus into temptation. That led me to wonder, “Does the Spirit lead us into temptation too?”

Those who believe that everything that happens is God’s plan unfolding can easily say “yes” to this. But the Stone-Campbell movement’s founders rejected this kind of thinking and their Calvinist roots (although some would argue they retained much of it).

When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we always ask God to “lead us not into temptation” and to “deliver us from evil.” Hmmm. I admit to getting hung up on that alot, because I believe we have free will (to some extent - I’m not going to go into a long dissertation on the subject here).

Perhaps we shouldn’t get too hung up on that question though. One way or the other, God is there when we face temptation. If God leads us in, then God provides the courage to face temptation, along with a way out. And if we stumble our own way into temptation, we can be sure of this — we can always call on God for strength and deliverance.

One way or another, we need to be prepared to face temptation. When we succeed, we become stronger. When we fail, we learn to rely on God’s grace, accept God’s forgiveness, forgive ourselves, and pick ourselves back up to try again.

What are your thoughts on temptation? How do you face it?

I don’t know that I’ll have something to write every day, but I’ll try.

Last night we had a great Ash Wednesday service. It was significant for me, anyway, because of all that happened in spite of my diligent preparations. Sometimes God works like that. More often than not….

So I arrived at the church more than an hour before the service was to begin. It was pouring rain and I knew we wouldn’t have a crowd, but I wanted to be prepared all the same. I had my supplies, I had my list, I had my bulletin with all my notes to myself. I did some things in the church office and then went into the sanctuary to turn on the heat and the lights. Then I went into the kitchen to prepare Communion.

When I came back into the sanctuary about 15 minutes later, it was already getting warm. Hot, actually. And there was a very odd smell. Kind of like burning chlorine, if you can imagine that. The warmer it got, the stronger the smell. I called Bill and he came up to the church to check things out, but could find no cause for the smell.

Soon a few people arrived. Everyone noticed the smell. I had turned the heat off but it was still strong, and it was starting to bother people (myself included). Five minutes before the service was to begin, we all decided to move it to the fellowship hall.

Everyone pitched in, kids and adults, moving tables and chairs, bringing the bread and the cup, the candle, the cross, and everything else we would need. We joked and talked quietly as we prepared the new space for worship. No one looked at the clock, or worried that we weren’t starting on time. Finally everyone took their seats and we began worship.

Later, I thought to myself that worship really began as we worked together to adapt to the circumstances, moving together, preparing together. Worship is, after all, the “work of the people.”

If those who were present last night look back next year on Ash Wednesday 2011, some will remember the liturgy — the symbolic burning of pieces of paper with our sins written on them. Some will remember receiving the ashes and the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” A few might recall hearing the conversation between God, the prophet Isaiah, and the people of Israel about “the fast that I choose,” or my words of reflection on that passage. Most, if not all of us will remember our work together, moving from a holy space to an improvised one, as servants of God together.
